This consultation, one of a series of consultations with civil society to prepare for the second Universal Periodic Review of the United States at the UN Human Rights Council next year, will address the domestic implementation of human rights treaties, treaties and international human rights mechanisms, as well as White House initiatives that relate to UPR recommendations.  A full list of the recommendations covered in issue groups 9 and 10, along with the explanation of U.S. support for these recommendations can be found at:  http://www.state.gov/j/drl/upr/recommendations/index.htm.
Representatives from the White House and various U.S. government agencies will participate in the consultation and respond to issues that are raised.

Please RSVP by Friday, July 25 to Erin Sielaff (SielaffE@state.gov) with the following information:
(a) your name

(b) your institutional affiliation, and

(c) whether you will participate in person or by telephone.

Persons who contact Erin Sielaff in advance about their wish to speak will be given priority. Current plans are to limit the statements to two minutes in order to allow for as many comments as possible in the time that is available. There will also be an opportunity for civil society comments in response to the consultation’s third segment that will focus on White House initiatives. Speakers for this segment will not be selected in advance.

The call-in information for phone participation is as follows: The dial in number is 202-395-6392, and the passcode is 6154633. There are a limited number of phone lines, so if multiple members of the same organization call in, please do so using one line. Individuals participating by phone are respectfully asked to mute their phones when they are not speaking to reduce background noises.
