UPR Updates

The Universal Periodic Review of the United States occurred on November 5th at 9 AM in Geneva, Switzerland.  Video of each segment is available on the UN website.  A Town Hall following the review in Geneva was webcast as well, beginning 10:30 AM EST. The transcript and the video of the Town Hall are available, as are advance questions submitted to the US Government on their human rights record.

The USHRN UPR Steering Committee submitted an official statement to the UN at the adoption, documenting the Committee's perspective on the review.

The UN reviewed functioning of the UPR and made a few changes for the next cycle, starting June 2012.  The U.S. is expected to be reviewed next in May 2015 with a mid-term report due Spring 2013.

The 26 stakeholder reports lay out the existing human rights frameworks in the U.S.; notes the lack of a coordinating authority or other adequate monitoring and enforcement mechanisms; highlights significant and specific shortcomings in domestic compliance with international human rights standards; and makes recommendations on how the U.S. can better meet those standards and live up to its treaty obligations.
