UN Releases ICCPR Concluding Observations Unedited Version

The United Nations Human Rights Committee released the Concluding Observations from the U.S. Government International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Review, which took place in Geneva on March 13-14, 2014. This is the advanced unedited version of the Concluding Observations published on March 27, 2014.

The U.S. Government has ratified the ICCPR treaty and undergoes periodic reviews by the UN on its record to protect and promote the human rights included in the treaty.

USHRN supported U.S. groups efforts to inform the review by coordinating the submission of shadow reports to the Committee in the lead up to the formal review.  From March 8-15, a U.S. civil society and Indigenous Nations delegation went to Geneva to present testimony to the Committee. Through the ICCPR Taskforce USHRN coordinated the participation of a delegation of activists and advocates for the Review, which included a broadly representative group of USHRN member and partner organizations.

Several concerns raised in the shadow reports and during the in-person testimony are included in the Concluding Observations.
