More than 30,000 undocumented Haitians currently living and working in the U.S. are facing immediate deportation. The timing of these deportations couldn’t be worse: Haiti is still reeling from a series of hurricanes last year that collectively constituted the worst natural disaster there in a century. Haiti’s critical infrastructure has not been rebuilt, and basic services have yet to be restored throughout the country. Repatriating thousands of people who will have little or no access to jobs, housing, food and health care would only destabilize an already fragile nation on the verge of economic and social collapse.
To date, the Obama administration has refused to grant Haitians temporary protective status (TPS), which would allow them to remain in the U.S. for an additional 18 months while the situation in Haiti improves. Yet the U.S. has routinely granted TPS to thousands of Salvadorans, Hondurans, Nicaraguans and other nationals whose homelands have been similarly devastated by natural disasters or conflicts. To deny the same treatment to Haitians at this time would constitute an unconscionable double standard and would be a gross violation of their human rights.
The US Human Rights Network joins the chorus of voices around the country calling for a halt to the deportations and a change in U.S. immigration policy that would prevent an even greater crisis than the one Haiti already faces. Please take a moment to learn more about this pressing issue and take action to stop the deportations now.
