ADVANCING HUMAN RIGHTS 2013: Dignity. Justice. Action.

Date:
Fri Dec 6, 2013 to Sun Dec 8, 2013
Location:
Atlanta,  Georgia
United States

Thank you for joining us in Atlanta for the 5th annual US Human Rights Network national conference - ADVANCING HUMAN RIGHTS 2013: Dignity. Justice. Action. Hundreds of human rights and social justice activists and advocates gathered in Atlanta to celebrate and advance human rights in the United States.  See a photo gallery below with conference highlights.  Go to our facebook page to see more event photos.

For the first time at the USHRN biannual conference, a series of volunteer note-takers utilized the "Problem Pyramid" mapping tool to document overarching causes, shared solutions, and emerging themes discussed among the many workshops, plenary sessions, and featured panels. The USHRN coordinating center has compiled the notes, along with fleshed out examples, to provide a summary of those causes, solutions and themes in its conference Outcome Document.

Attendees celebrated USHRN’s 10th Anniversary and the achievements of the seven (7) recipients of the inaugural Human Rights Movement Builders Award.  The conference started with a Human Rights 101 on Friday afternoon.  The formal Welcoming Event followed Friday evening, and was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church.  Attendees enjoyed performances by local artists, presentations by local activists, and addresses by the honorable Senator Nan Orrock, US Human Rights Executive Director Ejim Dike, and US Human Rights Board member Martin Luther King, III.

Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, conference participants attended full plenary presentations and moderated panels; concurrent workshops and panels; Peoples Movement Assemblies and caucuses; keynote addresses by Dr. Carol Anderson and Mr. Glenn E. Martin; and, a USHRN member meeting.  Participants were inspired by the human rights work happening around the U.S.; learned about the on-going struggles faced by communities around the country; were introduced to emerging human rights topics; and, connected with old friends and new, all working to strengthen a human rights movement in the U.S.

We thank the members of the National Planning and Atlanta Host Committees who graciously volunteered their time to help shape a dynamic and exciting conference that will grow and strengthen a people-centered human rights movement in the United States.
