USHRN Delegation Real Time Report Back from Geneva

CERD Briefing-Day 1

On Monday, February
18, 2008
, a delegation of more than one hundred grassroots
activists from a myriad of member organizations of the US Human Rights Network
gathered in Geneva to begin the
preliminary deliberations on the United States
compliance the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Racial Discrimination (ICERD). The
delegation of activists from all over the country came together to deliver a
scathing analysis of the U.S. government’s (federal, state and local) abdication
of its responsibilities under the Convention to the CERD Committee Members and
the Special Rapporteur on Racism, Doudou Diene. Issues
covered were law enforcement, reproductive heath, transgender women of color,
housing, immigrants and indigenous rights and the broad range of issues
affecting internally displaced Gulf Coast
residents. In a country that champions
human rights abroad yet fails to apply those same standards within the confines
of its own country, this historic delegation is representative of a broader
historical struggle against racial injustice that has always recognized the
importance of transnational activism and coalition building.
