Internship Opportunities:

The Network seeks hard-working and motivated interns to assist with research, analysis, membership support, virtual activism and administrative needs at the Coordinating Center in Atlanta. You can make a difference! Interns play a critical role supporting many of the Network’s core functions and activities. Depending on skills, experience and areas of interest, responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in data collection and analysis on domestic human rights issues of concern to the Coordinating Center and its membership. Key areas of focus for 2009-2010 include examining the prevailing human rights crisis in the Gulf Coast region in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita; monitoring U.S. compliance with the Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination; working with member organizations to conduct a Campaign for a New Domestic Human Rights Agenda, which calls for U.S. compliance with international human rights standards at home and abroad; and facilitating preparation of a civil society report for the 2010 U.N. Universal Periodic Review of the U.S. human rights record.
  • Communicating with and providing support to member organizations throughout the United States - responding to membership requests for education and training material; drafting and editing education and training documents or compilations; organizing and maintaining the Network library; updating member email bursts and listservs (and other communication tools); and assisting in the planning of the Network national membership meeting (with the next meeting taking place in late 2009).
  • Supporting efforts to amplify and improve the online presence of the Network - monitoring selected listservs; developing a mechanism to link the Network's website with other websites; assisting in the preparation of bi-weekly activity and news updates; and developing ideas for increasing online activists’ use of blogs and other online information sharing tools.
  • Supporting production of Twelve Ten, a semi-annual publication of the Network that serves as a means to inform the human rights community about the work of member organizations - researching story leads, fact-checking submitted articles, drafting and copyediting text, and reviewing editorial submissions and correspondence. Interns will be given the opportunity to publish short pieces in the magazine and gain exposure to many aspects of magazine publishing.

Competitive intern applicants will have completed a minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework, preferably working towards a graduate degree. Excellent writing and communication skills are required, as well as an understanding of human rights and social justice, and meticulous attention to detail and factual accuracy.

Candidates must be able to work with minimal supervision and commit to at least 12 weeks and 20-35 hours per week. There is no monetary compensation, but the position allows the intern to gain valuable experience as well as a formal letter of recommendation upon satisfactory completion of the internship. In addition, US Human Rights Network volunteers and interns receive priority consideration for new opportunities, paid and unpaid. Please submit applications to info@ushrnetwork.org.
